In 1976, Wilhelm Schafer had a muffler center that saw many customers with broken exhaust pipes but good converters. His son George, who worked part-time as the shop's manager while training for the US Olympic Rowing team, created a record that made it easier to copy the broke pipe and weld it back together. George created a catalog and took it to a starter and water pump company called SMS Products to meet the demands of the customers. Within three months, 300,000 USD worth of orders came in, and Eastern Manufacturing was born.

In 1980, when America decided not to participate in the Olympics, George decided to focus on the company full time. Working in a 2,000-square-foot garage in Philadelphia, George enjoyed the experience of growing a business together with his father, his brothers, and the people they hired. Eastern Manufacturing quickly became a supplier of new, universal, and direct-fit catalytic converters. In 1987, the company registered for incorporation in Pennsylvania, where a 120,000-square foot office complex in Langhorne serves as its headquarters today.

Today, Eastern provides automotive exhaust system components to customers in over 72 countries. It has the ability to do research and development, manufacture its own tooling, and provide products to the marine and industrial markets as well.
